SAND PAINTING
Sand painting is a unique approach to making a painting. The process of working with sand and sea water on the beach under sunny or overcast skies is as important as any finished product. Sand and sea water are mixed, flowing over canvas to create images that can be washed away or built upon. Once a pleasing structure is generated, it is fixed to the canvas and allowed to dry in the sun. Back in the studio, the painting begins, adding another dimension to the work.
I learned the art of sand painting from my friend and mentor, artist Judy Vogland, who in turn learned it from her mentor, Fred Kline. Fred and Judy both emphasized, and I have learned, the importance of attending to the environment in the present moment to quiet the mind and allow creativity to flow.
